Hello! And welcome to the 12th post of Pizza Rat's Paradise.
My first touristy exploration of Portland, Maine. Sat with a couple of grad school classmates and enjoyed my first legitimate lobster roll. It was extremely fresh, and I think what makes a lobster roll really stand out is warm melted butter -- I can't remember if I had it here, or it was somewhere else.
Some may say that lobster rolls are overpriced, but given that the lobster are literally caught in the harbor locally by fishermen, it makes sense as that's how they make their trade.
I think what really makes a Maine lobster roll stand out isn't simply the food itself -- it's the experience of sitting in the harbor with treasured company and making new memories.
I still remember the group I sat with -- it was my classmate's first-time trying lobster in his life, and it was cool to witness that moment and share in that landmark experience.
There's a certain kind of joy I've gotten from feeding people in the past -- I believe it was my 21st birthday (some time in my early 20's) that I made a huge batch of authentic KBBQ for my friends at the time -- it was a little chaotic and frenzied, but it was my first time and I was so happy that people loved the meal. Some people judged me, saying, "It's your birthday!! Why would you do that to yourself?" Well, if you have to ask, you do not know. You don't know what kind of joy it brings you to give people you love something truly incredible and special -- something delicious and tasty, high-quality and nutritious. The only thing I was missing from that experience was having a standardized set of tools and practices/processes so that I could be less stressed out. I was inculcated in a culture that praised girls for their intelligence and independence, but I do not think that is the most sustainable or healthy of behaviors, after some time working in various industries where women are expected to be "doing-it-all" -- it is okay to ask for help and not be the one doing it all. But if one does ask for help, I should think, one should ask in a way that is fair and appreciate the help that was given.
Because if you really loved your business or what you were doing, or who you were serving like you loved your own children, you'd want to give them the best tools they possibly can, and not simply be content with crumbs.
If you have made it this far, thank you for reading! 💚
